Have your say about important issues

At YouGov you can have your say on important issues by completing simple surveys.

I have been a member of YouGov for a while and find the surveys interesting. I feel like I just might be making a difference!

Here is some info taken from their website describing exactly what they do, it's a bit lengthy but well worth a read:

How it works
As a member of the YouGov Panel you will be invited from time-to-time to participate in surveys on topics ranging from from politics to painkillers to pensions. Each time you take part in a survey, you will have your virtual YouGov account credited with cash amounts depending on the survey's length, or you may be entered into a prize draw. When you reach £50 in your account, YouGov will send you a cheque for that amount.
Your account will be credited with your first £1 for registering.

Who reads the findings?
Who reads research findings depends on the client who has commissioned the research. Sometimes research is commissioned specially for publication. This is often the case with our media clients and you may see the results of our surveys in newspapers and on television. In other cases, research is used internally by a client for example, in order to inform a marketing or policy decision. In this case, the research is not usually made publicly available. Published results can be viewed in our published results archive.

Is YouGov a Government initiative?
YouGov is an independent research agency. It is not funded, run by, or affiliated to the Government or any Government agencies. As a research agency, we are commissioned by a wide range of clients from media, to academics, to companies, to not-for-profit organisations. YouGov therefore aims to provide accurate and high quality research to all our clients, allowing YouGov panel members the chance to voice their opinions on a wide range of topics.

Lightspeed Panel *updated 21/9/07*

When you join the Lightspeed Panel they send you an emails with invitations to complete surveys in exchange for points. Once you have built up enough points you can view their online catalogue and exchange them for various products including:

  • Cash into your Paypal account
  • Dvds
  • Beauty products
  • Household items
  • Vouchers
  • plus more

You are also placed in a free prize draw each month where you can win up to £2000.

I have been a member for over a year now and found that they send regular email invitations to surveys and have had money paid into my Paypal account with no problems.

You will sometimes be invited to test products that you have completed a survey about at the end of it. I was asked to test some chocolate - which I of course accepted after thinking about it for all of two seconds! - and had it posted to me for free. I then filled in another survey in relation to the product after 'testing' it and received even more points. What a hard one that was !

You are under no obligations to complete all of the surveys you are invited to, it is totally up to you to pick and choose.

*Some pointers/Mini Guide*

I just wanted to share some advice about finding & signing up for Freebies & Special offers.

Where can I find Freebies/Special offers?

There are lots of places you can find them - including this blog of course!

Online:

  • Dedicated websites that bring you Freebies/Special Offers
  • Use search engines to find what you are looking for - Google, Yahoo, Msn, etc.
  • Checkout your favourte stores online and check out their special offers sections - Asda, Tesco, Topshop, etc.
  • Use price comparison websites to make sure you are getting the best price - but bare in mind that they may not include all stores so use this as an additional search.
  • Use auction sites - Ebay, QXL, etc.
  • Sign up to Free loyalty card schemes - Nectar, Tesco Clubcard, etc. - that give you cash/products for collecting free points.

Offline:

  • Check the local papers for offers, discount vouchers, free samples
  • Sign up to Free loyalty card schemes - Nectar, Tesco Clubcard, etc. - that give you cash/products for collecting free points.
  • Pick up any promotional leaflets when visiting stores
  • Hit the sales !
  • Go to car boot sales, jumble sales, etc.

What are the benefits of Freebies & Special offers?

Personally, I find it very satisfying making big savings or getting something for nothing. It means that you can put aside or splurge that saving on that something extra you thought you couldn't have. You can also try out a new product for free before buying it and realising that you have wasted your money on something totally crap! Not forgetting those objects that are given away/swapped by lovely, generous people.

Why do companies give things away for free/with huge savings?

It is usually to let a customer try a new product and hope that they will love it so much that they make it a regular part of their shopping list. It is a good way to get their brand known and talked about. It will also boost their likeability if you think they are generous and kind! But that is fine by me because I very rarely become a full time customer ;-)

General pointers

  • Always read the terms and conditions thoroughly before signing up for any offers incase of any hidden catches.

  • Make sure to check the expiry date on any offers - especially the older posts on this blog.

  • If meeting to swap/give away/collect any objects from people you don't know please make sure you keep yourself safe, meet in a public place if possible. And never disclose any irrelavant personal details.

  • Always check whether your details will be shared with other websites when applying for offers as some will send on your info (name, email, etc) to other companies to send you offers. Most sites will give you the option whether you would or wouldn't like your details sent on. I usually say no to sharing my details as you can end up with loads of spam.

  • Try to create a seperate email address for freebies/special offers so they are easier to keep track of and this will also stop any unwanted spam clogging up your usual email account.

I hope these few pointers helped you, now it's time to go have some fun...
